Starbugs are self-motile fibre optic positioning robots developed by AAO-MQ. MANIFEST (MANy Instrument FibrE SysTem) is a facility class Instrument which will operate up to 900 Starbugs on the Giant Magellan Telescope (GMT). The FOBOS (Fibre-Optic Broadband Optical Spectrograph) Fibre Positioner is a facility class Instrument which will operate up to 1800 Starbugs on the Keck Telescope. Starbugs deliver an optical payload to the location of an astronomical object on the telescope focal plane. The Starbugs are made from a pair of concentric Piezoceramic Tubes (PZT), and a high-voltage waveform is applied to the PZT to create an actuation. Staging of the waveform creates successive microsteps, on the order of 3-20 μm each, at a driven frequency of 100Hz. The Starbugs are adhered to the Glass Field Plate (GFP) using an ancillary vacuum system, which must provide sufficient adhesion force to maintain the Starbug GFP position in the high-altitude environmental conditions at Mauna Kea (MKO) and Las Campanas Observatory (LCO) sites. The minimum vacuum adhesion requirements to achieve Starbug GFP position were used to specify the vacuum pump flow rate and operational head pressure. The vacuum adhesion requirements were experimentally obtained using the Starbug Test Stand, located in Sydney, Australia. The Starbugs Test Stand vacuum adhesion requirements were parametised for dry air mass flow rate and head pressure, and then corrected for the 95th percentile environmental conditions at MKO and LCO. The vacuum system numerical model was verified by the TAIPAN instrument. When corrected for ambient atmospheric conditions at the UK Schmidt Telescope (Siding Spring Observatory, Australia), the numerical model could predict the steady state vacuum pump speed with 1.29% variation from the measured vacuum pump speed recorded by the TAIPAN Instrument control software. This capability of the numerical model will be used for real-time condition monitoring of the Starbugs Instruments.

Starbugs are self-motile fibre optic positioning robots developed by AAO-MQ. The MANIFEST (MANy Instrument FibrE SysTem) is a facility class Instrument which will operate up to 900 Starbugs on the Giant Magellan Telescope (GMT). The FOBOS (Fibre-Optic Broadband Optical Spectrograph) Fibre Positioner is a facility class Instrument which will operate up to 1800 Starbugs on the Keck Telescope. The Starbugs deliver an optical payload to the location of an astronomical object on the telescope focal plane. The Starbugs are made from a pair of concentric Piezoceramic Tubes (PZT), and a high-voltage waveform is applied to the PZT to create an actuation. Staging of the waveform creates successive microsteps, on the order of 3-20 μm each, at a driven frequency of 100Hz. The Starbugs are adhered to the Glass Field Plate (GFP) using an ancillary vacuum system. The Starbugs have an airtight vacuum sealing component between the PZT and the GFP, called Slippers, which serve as a traction surface against the polished GFP. The Slippers set the science fibre focus offset, which has functional requirements that trace to Observatory level requirements. The Slipper components are subject to non-zero centred fully reversed fatigue loading due to the combined load case of the vacuum induced compression and the shear load of the PZT actuation as the Starbug completes the step. The contact interface between the Slipper and the GFP is subject to surface fatigue and functions as a sacrificial wear surface to ensure the longevity of both the PZT and the optical payload. The fatigue life behaviour of the Slipper, with particular interest on this interface, was defined using industry standard methods and informed the trade study to select the appropriate material for the Slippers to survive a nominal period on-sky (fatigue life). The trade study terms were vacuum sealing ability as a function of mechanical hardness versus fatigue life (108 cycles). Several suitable materials were identified and will be physically prototyped, with results reported in this manuscript.

The Fiber Optic Broad-band Optical Spectrometer (FOBOS) is a high-priority spectroscopic facility concept for the W. M. Keck Observatory. Here, we provide an update on the FOBOS conceptual design. FOBOS will deploy 1800 fibers across the 20-arcminute field-of-view of the Keck II Telescope. Starbugs fiber positioners will be used to deploy individual fibers as well as fiber-bundle arrays (integral field units, IFUs). Different combinations of active single fibers or IFUs can be selected to carry light to one of three mounted spectrographs, each with a 600-fiber pseudoslit. Each spectrograph has four wavelength channels, enabling end-to-end instrument sensitivity greater than 30% from 0.31-1.0 µm at a spectral resolution of R ~ 3500. With its high fiber density on a large telescope and modest field-of-view, FOBOS is optimized to obtain deep spectroscopy for large samples. In single- fiber mode, it will deliver premier spectroscopic reference sets for maximizing the information (e.g., photometric redshifts) that can be extracted from panoramic imaging surveys obtained from the forthcoming Rubin and Roman Observatories. Its IFUs will map emission from the circumgalactic interface between forming galaxies and the intergalactic medium at z ~ 2–3, and lay the path for multiplexed resolved spectroscopy of high-z galaxies aided by ground-layer and multi-object adaptive optics. In the nearby universe, its high sampling density and combination of single-fiber and IFU modes will revolutionize our understanding of the M31 disk and bulge via stellar populations and kinematics. Finally, with a robust and intelligent target and program allocation system, FOBOS will be a premier facility for follow-up of rare, faint, and transient sources that can be interleaved into its suite of observing programs. With a commitment to delivering science-ready data products, FOBOS will enable unique and powerful combinations of focused, PI-led programs and community-driven observing campaigns that promise major advances in cosmology, galaxy formation, time-domain astronomy, and stellar evolution.

Hector is a multi-IFU spectrograph in phase-A building for the Anglo-Australian Telescope (AAT) using fibers. Its goal is to observe 30,000 galaxies when fully complete. It is a follow up instrument of SAMI which has 13 IFUs 15" wide. The full project will have a 2 degree field corrector and at least 3 spectrographs. The IFUs are hexabundles 15" to 30" wide made of bare fibers with no buffer tightly packed and fused together to minimize the surface losses between their cores. Many different transparent spectrograph designs were studied covering a large parameter space. An important trade-off study was between the use of microlenses on the slit or just bare fibers. Microlenses have disadvantages but permit considerable simplification of the collimator by making the beam very slow. With microlenses, the collimator can be a unique spherical plano-convex lens significantly smaller than the mirror that would be needed in a reflective design. In the first part of the design, 26 different cameras where designed to cover the parameter space for 2k x 2k, 2k x 4k, or 4k x 4k detectors, and for 50, 75 or 100 micron fiber cores, with or without microlenses, with a triplet in the camera or a doublet plus singlet, and with a maximum wavelength of 1 or 1.05 microns. Not all combinations were designed but for each parameter there are at least two representative cameras with all other parameters identical. A preliminary cost estimate was made for the most promising designs which permitted to reduce them to 3 set of parameters for detailed designing, then to 2 with 4k x 4k detectors and 100 micron fiber cores. One design was made to be simple and low risk with only singlets in the collimator and cameras, the other complex with a mirror in the collimator, doublets and triplets, and innovations that could give better performance at a lower cost but with increased risk. For similar cost, the safe design has lower performances but also lower risks than the complex design. In the final stage of design, a trade-off hybrid design that keep the best of both ended being much cheaper, lower risk and with a shorter schedule than the complex design and with much better performances than the safe design. For this design, a model of the cost using lens diameter, glass cost and asphere complexity as the parameters was directly included in the Zemax Merit Function leading to significant cost improvement at fixed performances. The final design has 2 cameras covering 372 nm to 778 nm at an average resolution of 0.12 nm and able to accommodate about 1000 fibers of 1.6" core diameter. The collimator has 4 lenses and the cameras 4 and 5. There are no microlenses on the slit. The spectrograph can be upgraded with a third camera extending the coverage to 1000 nm.

Based on the success of the SAMI integral field spectrograph (IFS) instrument on the Anglo-Australian Telescope (AAT) the capacity for large IFS nearby galaxy surveys on the AAT is being substantially expanded with a new instrument called Hector. The high filling-fraction imaging fibre bundles ‘hexabundles’ of the type used on SAMI, are being enlarged to cover up to 30-arcsec diameter. The aim is to reach two effective radii on most galaxies, where the galaxy rotation curve flattens and >75% of the specific angular momentum of disk galaxies is accounted for. Driven by the key science case, Hector will have a 1.3A spectral resolution, enabling high-order stellar kinematics to be measured on a larger fraction of galaxies than with any other IFS instrument. Hector will be on sky in 2019. The first module of Hector, Hector-I, will have 21 hexabundles and >42 sky fibres to observe 20 galaxies and a calibration star simultaneously. It consists of new blue and red-arm spectrographs that have been designed at the Australian Astronomical Observatory (AAO; now called AAO-Macquarie), coupled to the new hexabundles and robotic positioner from AAO-USydney (formerly the Sydney Astrophotonics Instrumentation Laboratory, SAIL) at Sydney University. A novel robotic positioning concept will compensate for varying telecentricity over the 2-degree-field of the AAT to recoup the 20% loss in light at the edge of the field. Hector-I will survey 15,000 galaxies. Additional modules in the future would result in 30,000 galaxies. Hector will take integral field spectroscopy on galaxies with z<0.15 in the 4MOST WAVES-North and WAVES-South∗ regions. The WAVES data, which will come later, will give the environment metrics neces- sary to relate how local and global environments influence galaxy growth through gas accretion, star formation and spins measured with Hector. The WALLABY ASKAP† survey will trace HI gas across the Hector fields, which in combination with Hector will give a complete view of gas accretion and star formation.

PRAXIS is a second generation instrument that follows on from GNOSIS, which was the first instrument using fibre Bragg gratings for OH suppression to be deployed on a telescope. The Bragg gratings reflect the NIR OH lines while being transparent to the light between the lines. This gives in principle a much higher signal-noise ratio at low resolution spectroscopy but also at higher resolutions by removing the scattered wings of the OH lines. The specifications call for high throughput and very low thermal and detector noise so that PRAXIS will remain sky noise limited even with the low sky background levels remaining after OH suppression. The optical and mechanical designs are presented. The optical train starts with fore-optics that image the telescope focal plane on an IFU which has 19 hexagonal microlenses each feeding a multi-mode fibre. Seven of these fibres are attached to a fibre Bragg grating OH suppression system while the others are reference/acquisition fibres. The light from each of the seven OH suppression fibres is then split by a photonic lantern into many single mode fibres where the Bragg gratings are imprinted. Another lantern recombines the light from the single mode fibres into a multi-mode fibre. A trade-off was made in the design of the IFU between field of view and transmission to maximize the signal-noise ratio for observations of faint, compact objects under typical seeing. GNOSIS used the pre-existing IRIS2 spectrograph while PRAXIS will use a new spectrograph specifically designed for the fibre Bragg grating OH suppression and optimised for 1.47 μm to 1.7 μm (it can also be used in the 1.09 μm to 1.26 μm band by changing the grating and refocussing). This results in a significantly higher transmission due to high efficiency coatings, a VPH grating at low incident angle and optimized for our small bandwidth, and low absorption glasses. The detector noise will also be lower thanks to the use of a current generation HAWAII-2RG detector. Throughout the PRAXIS design, from the fore-optics to the detector enclosure, special care was taken at every step along the optical path to reduce thermal emission or stop it leaking into the system. The spectrograph design itself was particularly challenging in this aspect because practical constraints required that the detector and the spectrograph enclosures be physically separate with air at ambient temperature between them. At present, the instrument uses the GNOSIS fibre Bragg grating OH suppression unit. We intend to soon use a new OH suppression unit based on multicore fibre Bragg gratings which will allow an increased field of view per fibre. Theoretical calculations show that the gain in interline sky background signal-noise ratio over GNOSIS may very well be as high as 9 with the GNOSIS OH suppression unit and 17 with the multicore fibre OH suppression unit.
