This article reviews our laboratory's experience in the field of vascular welding using the milliwatt CO2 laser to repair 4-mm to 9-mm canine vessels. Previous work in arterial anastomosis and intraluminal welding is presented. A preliminary study in the area of venous laser-assisted anastomosis is presented in detail. A limited discussion of the field will emphasize what we know and what still must be learned.
