The generation of a temporary stable, TerraW, spectrally broadened laser beam with uniform wavefront is carried out through self-phase modulation in 3-mm Sa plate. The set-up for compression of the obtained spectrally broadened pulse is provided by 2x128 pixels Spatial Light Modulator (SLM) controlled by a genetic algorithm. The obtained ultrashort laser pulses have been characterized by an APE pulse measuring system SPIDER. The measurements show that the pulse length decreases more than 2 times: from 62 fs up to 28 fs. The new pulse shape is close to linear.
We review recent developments in the generation and metrology of XUV-attosecond (as) pulses. The review includes an extended report on the recently achieved 2nd-order autocorrelation measurement of a sub-femtosecond (sub-fs) pulse train.

Extreme Ultraviolet (XUV) sources based on femtosecond laser - high order harmonic generation (HHG) in atomic gases are presently in a period of rapid development. The HHG sources offer the additional advantage of delivering much shorter pulses compared to those of plasma generation or synchrotron sources. Furthermore, because they are coherent sources with high photon energy, they support attosecond pulse (10-18 s) generation, pushing the frontiers in both science and technology. These pulses open up research on unprecedented time scales, characteristic of bound electron motion. Issues related to the production and characterization of such pulses are presented.
We discuss the effect of laser induced continuum structure and the modification of quasi bound state of atomic systems as well as its possible applicability towards amplification of short wavelengths in schemes in which no inversion of population is established.

Under appropriate conditions, the smooth continuum of the atom becomes structured when a bound state is coupled by a strong field with this continuum. Performing a two-color experiment in calcium we have built a dressed continuum and probed it by third harmonic generation.
