The instrumentation of the Prime Focus Spectrograph (PFS), a next generation facility instrument on the Subaru telescope, is now in the final phase of its commissioning process and its general, open-use operations for sciences will provisionally start in 2025. The instrument enables simultaneous spectroscopy with 2386 individual fibers distributed over a very wide (∼1.3 degrees in diameter) field of view on the Subaru’s prime focus. The spectra cover a wide range of wavelengths from 380nm to 1260nm in one exposure in the Low-Resolution (LR) mode (while the visible red channel has the Medium-Resolution (MR) mode as well that covers 710−885nm). The system integration activities at the observatory on Maunakea in Hawaii have been continuing since the arrival of the Metrology Camera System in 2018. On-sky engineering tests and observations have also been carried out continually since September 2021 and, despite various difficulties in interlacing commissioning processes with development activities on the schedule and addressing some major issues on hardware and software, the team successfully observed many targeted stars as intended over the entire field of view (Engineering First Light) in September 2022. Then in parallel to the arrival, integration and commissioning of more hardware components, validations and optimizations of the performance and operation of the instrument are ongoing. The accuracy of the fiber positioning process and the speed of the fiber reconfiguration process have been recently confirmed to be ∼ 20−30μm for 95% of allocated fibers, and ∼130 seconds, respectively. While precise quantitative analyses are still in progress, the measured throughput has been confirmed to be consistent with the model where the information from various sub-components and sub-assemblies is integrated. Long integration of relatively faint objects are being taken to validate an expected increase of signal-to-noise ratio as more exposures are taken and co-added without any serious systematic errors from, e.g., sky subtraction process. The PFS science operation will be carried out in a queue mode by default and various developments, implementations and validations have been underway accordingly in parallel to the instrument commissioning activities. Meetings and sessions are arranged continually with the communities of potential PFS users on multiple scales, and discussions are iterated for mutual understanding and possible optimization of the rules and procedures over a wide range of processes such as proposal submission, observation planning, data acquisition and data delivery. The end-to-end processes of queue observations including successive exposures with updated plans based on assessed qualities of the data from past observations are being tested during engineering observations, and further optimizations are being undertaken. In this contribution, a top-level summary of these achievements and ongoing progresses and future perspectives will be provided.

The Spectrograph System (SpS) of Subaru Prime Focus Spectrograph is fed by 2400 fibers and consists of four identical spectrograph modules with 4 arms and 600 fibers each. This paper outlines the overall integration process for the spectrograph module series as completed at the Subaru Telescope. Many partners from the Subaru PFS Collaboration and industry contributed to this large multi-object spectrograph system. The initial integration of the so-called "one-channel prototype" began in 2015. The first spectrograph module was delivered to Subaru in 2019, and the fourth module was delivered in late 2023, with delays due to both technical difficulties and scheduling challenges, including the impact of COVID-19 on the large PFS spectrograph system collaboration. The integration and validation of each spectrograph module were performed at the Laboratoire d’Astrophysique de Marseille (LAM) prior to delivery and full integration at the Subaru Telescope. First, we briefly review the opto-mechanical design and development strategy for the SpS. We present the integration and testing procedures developed for this mini-series of four spectrograph modules. Several specific AIT tools were innovative and key to the process, and are worth reporting, including the software tools required for functional tests, housekeeping, and environment monitoring during integration, analysis of dimensional metrology, test and verification of optical alignment, and overall performance assessment. Specific processes were also developed for analyzing and resolving anomalies and issues encountered. We detail the strategies developed to resolve technical issues: thermal and vacuum performance; dimensional and optical metrology processes to correct for focus/tilt anomalies observed at the focal plane; handling, alignment, and optical testing of large optics such as the 340x340x20mm Volume Phase Holographic Grating (VPHG). We briefly report on a grating orientation issue discovered before the delivery of the last module, which is reported elsewhere. We quickly report the integration logistics: managing the shipping process, custom, and deliveries of many parts and modules among partners since 2014, and the final delivery and installation at the Subaru Telescope at the summit of Mauna Kea in Hawai`i in 2019, 2022, and 2023. We then dedicate a full section to the optical and thermal performance for the largest 8m-class multi-object spectrograph: the spectral channels and camera alignment performance results and the detailed optical performance of the four spectrograph modules (extracted from internal extended performance reports).

ESA’s mission Euclid while undertaking its final integration stage is fully qualified. Euclid will perform an extra galactic survey (0<z<2) using visible and near-infrared light. To detect the infrared radiation is equipped with the Near Infrared Spectro-Photometer (NISP) instrument with a sensitivity in the 0.9-2 μm range. We present an illustration of the NISP Data Processing Unit’s Application Software, highlighting the experimental process to obtain the final parametrization of the on-board processing of data produced by an array of 16 Teledyne’s HAWAII-2RG (HgCdTe) - each of 2048×2048 px², 0.3 arcsec/px, 18 μm pixel pitch; using data from the latest test campaigns done with the flight configuration hardware - complete optical system (Korsh anastigmat telescope), detectors array (0.56 deg² firld of view) and readout systems (16 Digital Control Units and Sidecar ASICs). Also, we show the outstanding Spectrometric (using a Blue and two Red Grisms) and Photometric (using Y_E 0.92-1.15μm, J_E 1.15-1.37μm, and H_E 1.37-2.0 μm filters) performances of the NISP detector derived from the end-to-end payload module test campaign at FOCAL 5 - CSL; among them the Photometric Point Spread Function (PSF) determination, and the Spectroscopic dispersion verification. Also the performances of the onboard processing are presented. Then, we describe the solution of a major issue found during this final test phase that put NISP in the critical path. We will describe how the problem was eventually understood and solved thanks to an intensive coordinated effort of an independent review team (tiger team lead by ESA) and a team of NISP experts from the Euclid Consortium. An extended PLM level campaign in ambient in Liege and a dedicated test campaign conducted in Marseille on the NISP EQM model, with both industrial and managerial support, finally confirmed the correctness of the diagnosis of the problem. Finally, the Euclid’s survey is presented (14000 deg² wide survey, and ∼40 deg² deep-survey) as well as the global statistics for a mission lifetime of 6 years (∼1.5 billion Galaxy’s shapes, and ∼50 million Galaxy’s spectra).

HARMONI is the Extremely Large Telescope visible and near infrared integral field spectrograph and will be one of the first light instruments. The instrument supports four operational modes called No Adaptive Optics (NOAO), Single Conjugated Adaptive Optics (SCAO), High Contrast Adaptive Optics (HCAO), and Laser Tomography Adaptive Optics (LTAO). These operational modes are closely related to the wavefront correction topology used to support the performance required for each of the science cases. By following a novel function model-based systems engineering (FBSE) methodology in conjunction with observing the software computer system golden rule of design; namely having tight cohesion within software modules and loose coupling between modules, a system architecture has emerged. In this paper, we present the design of the HARMONI Control System (HCS). Although this is not the first time (for example NACO on VLT and NIRC2 on Keck) that the adaptive optics required to correct the atmospheric turbulence is part of a general instrument design, and not tailored for a very specific science case, this will be the first instrument of this size and complexity in the era of extremely large ground-based telescopes. The instrument control design must be compatible with the ELT instrument control system framework while there is also an expectation that the adaptive optics (AO) real-time computer toolkit (RTC-TK) should be used for the realization of the AO real-time control software and hardware. The HCS is composed of the instrument control electronics (ICE), the Instrument Control System (ICS), and the AO Control Sub-system (AOCS). The operation concept of the instrument is also novel in that for each mode the instrument creates an instantiation of a virtual system composed of only the system blocks required to provide the selected mode of operation. Therefore, each mode supports a unique system composition in terms of hardware, software, and the sequencing of activities.

FOCCoS, "Fiber Optical Cable and Connector System" has the main function of capturing the direct light from the focal plane of Subaru Telescope using optical fibers, each one with a microlens in its tip, and conducting this light through a route containing connectors to a set of four spectrographs. The optical fiber cable is divided in 3 different segments called Cable A, Cable B and Cable C. Multi-fibers connectors assure precise connection among all optical fibers of the segments, providing flexibility for instrument changes. To assure strong and accurate connection, these sets are arranged inside two types of assemblies: the Tower Connector, for connection between Cable C and Cable B; and the Gang Connector, for connection between Cable B and Cable A. Throughput tests were made to evaluate the efficiency of the connections. A lifetime test connection is in progress. Cable C is installed inside the PFI, Prime Focus Instrument, where each fiber tip with a microlens is bonded to the end of the shaft of a 2-stage piezo-electric rotatory motor positioner; this assembly allows each fiber to be placed anywhere within its patrol region, which is 9.5mm diameter.. Each positioner uses a fiber arm to support the ferrule, the microlens, and the optical fiber. 2400 of these assemblies are arranged on a motor bench plate in a hexagonal-closed-packed disposition. All optical fibers from Cable C, protected by tubes, pass through the motors’ bench plate, three modular plates and a strain relief box, terminating at the Tower Connector. Cable B is permanently installed at Subaru Telescope structure, as a link between Cable C and Cable A. This cable B starts at the Tower Connector device, placed on a lateral structure of the telescope, and terminates at the Gang Connector device. Cable B will be routed to minimize the compression, torsion and bending caused by the cable weight and telescope motion. In the spectrograph room, Cable A starts at the Gang Connector, crosses a distribution box and terminates in a slit device. Each slit device receives approximately 600 optical fibers, linearly arrayed in a curve for better orientation of the light to the spectrograph collimator mirror. Four sets of Gang Connectors, distribution boxes and Slit devices complete one Cable A. This paper will review the general design of the FOCCoS subsystem, methods used to manufacture the involved devices, and the needed tests results to evaluate the total efficiency of the set.

The Prime Focus Spectrograph (PFS) is an optical/near-infrared multi-fiber spectrograph with 2394 science fibers, which are distributed in 1.3 degree diameter field of view at Subaru 8.2-meter telescope. The simultaneous wide wavelength coverage from 0.38 μm to 1.26 μm, with the resolving power of 3000, strengthens its ability to target three main survey programs: cosmology, Galactic archaeology, and galaxy/AGN evolution. A medium resolution mode with resolving power of 5000 for 0.71 μm to 0.89 μm also will be available by simply exchanging dispersers. PFS takes the role for the spectroscopic part of the Subaru Measurement of Images and Redshifts (SuMIRe) project, while Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC) works on the imaging part. HSC’s excellent image qualities have proven the high quality of the Wide Field Corrector (WFC), which PFS shares with HSC. The PFS collaboration has succeeded in the project Preliminary Design Review and is now in a phase of subsystem Critical Design Reviews and construction. To transform the telescope plus WFC focal ratio, a 3-mm thick broad-band coated microlens is glued to each fiber tip. The microlenses are molded glass, providing uniform lens dimensions and a variety of refractive-index selection. After successful production of mechanical and optical samples, mass production is now complete. Following careful investigations including Focal Ratio Degradation (FRD) measurements, a higher transmission fiber is selected for the longest part of cable system, while one with a better FRD performance is selected for the fiber-positioner and fiber-slit components, given the more frequent fiber movements and tightly curved structure. Each Fiber positioner consists of two stages of piezo-electric rotary motors. Its engineering model has been produced and tested. After evaluating the statistics of positioning accuracies, collision avoidance software, and interferences (if any) within/between electronics boards, mass production will commence. Fiber positioning will be performed iteratively by taking an image of artificially back-illuminated fibers with the Metrology camera located in the Cassegrain container. The camera is carefully designed so that fiber position measurements are unaffected by small amounts of high special-frequency inaccuracies in WFC lens surface shapes. Target light carried through the fiber system reaches one of four identical fast-Schmidt spectrograph modules, each with three arms. All optical glass blanks are now being polished. Prototype VPH gratings have been optically tested. CCD production is complete, with standard fully-depleted CCDs for red arms and more-challenging thinner fully-depleted CCDs with blue-optimized coating for blue arms. The active damping system against cooler vibration has been proven to work as predicted, and spectrographs have been designed to avoid small possible residual resonances.
