1 November 2003 Far-field diffraction characteristics of a time-dependent Gaussian-shaped pulsed beam incident on the reflection grating

The diffraction characteristics of a broadband light source from a reflection grating in the far field are theoretically investigated with a prompt and precise mathematical derivation. We provide a rigorous treatment of a time-dependent Gaussian-shaped pulsed beam reflecting from a grating and give more accurate and concrete criteria judging the timing for the spectral red and blue shifts and the splitting of light distributions. In addition, the distortion of the space-time diffraction intensity distribution is also presented in detail.
