Abstract
Optical imaging of a bundle of sensing optical fibres demonstrates a low cost solution to multi-sensor measurements. Each sensor signal is carried to a common point where it is combined with other sensor channels into a fibre bundle. A low cost optical-RAM detector transfers the bundle image directly into the screen memory of a small microcomputing system. Software algorithms allow channel discrimination, signal detection, signal processing, decision making and graphical presentation. Up to 64 independent optical channels can be detected simultaneously in a snap-shot mode and the logic state (ON-OFF) of the sensors determined within a fraction of a second. Analog signals over any optical range of three decades can also be processed with an accuracy of 5%.
