Abstract
This paper reports laboratory comparison of fiber laser geophones and moving-coil geophones. A fiber laser geophone and a 20 DX geophone geophone were tested. The fiber laser geophone is based on a L shape beam structure and demodulated with an interferometric method. The signal of the moving-coil geophone is measured by a 24-Bit DAQ. Typical features of geophones include sensitivity, frequency response, spurious frequency, dynamic range, damp and noise character were compared. The results show that the fiber laser geophone has comparable performances with moving-coil geophone, and exhibits very high sensitivity and better high-frequency signal to noise ratio than moving-coil geophone. The fiber laser geophone is expect to be applied in micro-seismic monitoring of unconventional oil and gas hydraulic fracturing.
