Abstract

A compact, solid-state, diode-pumped laser at 532 nm stabilized in frequency on one of the electronic transitions R(56) 32-0 of the absorbing molecule ¹²⁷I₂ has been developed and investigated. The active medium is Nd:YVO₄ and a KTP crystal is used for intracavity frequency doubling. Third-harmonic techniques are used for frequency stabilization with an external iodine cell. Electronic units are designed for the power supply, the five temperature control systems of the laser elements and of the iodine cell finger, and that of servo electronics for frequency stabilization. The frequency stability in terms of an Allan variance is 2×10^-12, 1×10^-13 and 3.1×10^-14 at the time intervals of 0.1 s, 10 s and 100 s, respectively. The laser output power at 532 nm is greater than 4 mW. Such lasers will find wide application in laser displacement interferometry, in laser interferometers for absolute gravimeters and in laser spectroscopy. These lasers can also be used as portable secondary wavelength (frequency) standards at 532 nm.
