Abstract
In this paper a method about aerosol particles aerodynamic diameter measurement is introduced. This method is based on the measurement of aerosol particles time-of-flight velocimetry. When aerosol particle passes through two closely spaced elliptic gauss beams two light scattering signals are recorded. For two fixed distance beams the flight velocities of different-size particles are discrepant because of their different inertia. The higher the particle's inertia the slower its exit velocity. Photo detector APD detects the scattering light of particle and yields a double peak signal. The time of flight information is derived from the double peak signal. Then the particle size can be calculated by measuring time signal when particle passes through the two beams. By using standard aerosol particles which are generated by aerosol generator (Model 3450 TSI. Inc.) a calibration curve of the time of flight versus aerodynamic diameter of particle is obtained. As an example the laboratory air size distribution is measured by this system. The experiment result shows the air size distribution presents lognormal distribution which is accorded with the theoretical value. This system is capable ofobtaining high-resolution size distribution of particle in micron magnitude.
