Abstract
Phthalocyanines and porphyrins are 18 π-electron aromatic macrocycles that possess singular optical properties. They were shown to be extremely efficient organic compounds in the fields of photodynamic therapy and optical limiting. This short review intends to give a short overview from the basic principles to the newest findings of phthalocyanines and derivatives in these two health-related research fields.
