Abstract

This paper reports on the investigations of C₆₀ fullerenes films as an optical fiber coating material. The C₆₀ films were coated on the glass substrates and optical fibers by thermal evaporation of commercial C₆₀ powders at a filament temperature of 400°C in a vacuum. The structure and optical properties of these films were investigated. We found that the uniform films could be coated on fibers with a satisfactory adhesion and mechanical properties. In order to improve the properties such as density and surface morphology, we have annealed the coated films in low temperature range (<200°C). Optical transmittance and spectra were recorded and scratch tests were conducted for the coated films. It was found that the densification and reduction of surface roughness occurred when coated C60 films were annealed near by 100°C.
