Abstract
The cleaning of CuZn surfaces is carried out suing a portable Nd:YAG laser and also a 'fixed' CO2 laser. With both lasers the layer of dirtiness is efficiently eliminated. The cleaning process with Nd:YAG laser with nanosecond range pulse duration, cause periodic surface structure formation, as well as an increase of the surface hardness of about 20 percent, attributed to the 'shock hardening' effect. When the CO2 laser is used for cleaning, the melting of a thin surface layer is observed.
