Abstract
The effectiveness of statistical multiplexing was investigated in two ways. One the one hand, two-channel tests facilitated detailed statements about the mechanisms of statistical multiplexing. Based on a simple concept of criticality for MPEG-2 coding, good agreement with theoretical expectations was found only for combinations of sequences which differed strongly in criticality. For these cases, a considerable increase in quality of the more critical sequence sand even an increase of the 'overall quality' (quality of sequences of both channels) was observed. On the other hand, the improvement of the picture quality was evaluated for multi-channel systems (4 and 8 channels). In a life demonstration at an international assembly, many experts could convince themselves of the advantage of this method. The results were also recorded and evaluated using a recently developed method of objective picture quality measurement which confirmed the subjective impression and led to quantitative statements. It became quite evident that peaks of impairment could be avoided by statistical multiplexing.
