Abstract
A new magneto-optical signal detection method employing both Kerr effect and optical dichroism is proposed. Be setting a wave plate between the polarization beam splitter and the disk, an elliptically polarized light is focused on the disk. By selecting a wave plate and its setting angle properly, and also by enhancement of Kerr ellipticity (epsilon) K of the recording materials, a higher carrier-to-noise ratio can be obtained.
