Abstract
The effect of one-dimensional sinusoidal and trochoidal waves on the imaging of a submerged object is compared, Images were computed for crest-to-trough wave heights of 1/4 to 1 times the maximum possible value of 1/7, where 1 is the wavelength, and for wavelengths varying from 0.3 to 10 times the diameter of the object d for the passage of one period of the wave through the imaging frame for looking straight down. It is found that the slope discontinuity or near-discontinuity at the crest of the trochoidal wave results in a greater tendency toward fission of the image than is the case for the sinusoidal wave.
