Abstract
In this work, a novel tunable plasma bandstop filters is investigated using the Finite-Difference Time-Domain method (FDTD) and Coupled Mode Theory (CMT). The filter consists of a Metal-Insulator-Metal (MIM) waveguide and a hexagonal ring containing silver nanopillars. The results show that the performance of the filter can be significantly influenced by varying the number and radius of the nanopillars. In particular, the minimum transmission of the hexagonal ring filter with the addition of three nanopillars reached 9.92% and 0.56% at 650 nm and 824 nm, with a sensitivity of 810 nm/RIU, respectively. In addition, the radius of the silver nanopillar in the hexagonal ring can also change the position of the resonance peak. To further improve the filtering effect, an identical resonant cavity is added to the right side of the hexagonal ring in this work. The filter produces three resonant modes at resonant wavelengths of 685 nm, 780 nm and 1018 nm with minimum transmission of 10.50%, 0.84% and 0.02%, respectively. The Full Width at Half Maximum (FWHM) are 5.3 nm, 8.2 nm and 8.6 nm, with quality factors (Q) of 129.24, 95.12 and 118.37. The sensitivity of this filter reach to 1010 nm/RIU. In practice, the filter exhibits sensitivities of 1017 nm/RIU, 1008 nm/RIU, 1050 nm/RIU and 1009 nm/RIU for the detection of plasma, haemoglobin, glucose and Sylgard184. Therefore, the structures can be used to nanoscale filters and refractive index sensors, it is providing a new reference for related fields.
