Abstract
In order to construct high precision Non-Uniform Rational B-Spline (NURBS) surface from scattered point cloud, a new method is proposed combining patch growing and Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO). In this method, point cloud is divided into point cloud patches and fitted into NURBS patches successively. The process of fitting new point cloud patch is constrained by the previously constructed NURBS patch to achieve G1 continuity between NURBS patches. The PSO algorithm is used to construct each of the NURBS patches in just one step. The dimension of particle in the PSO algorithm is reduced so that the process of finding the best solution is simplified. The experimental results show that compared with the traditional NURBS fitting method and the NURBS fitting method using PSO algorithm, the root mean square error and the error variance are significantly reduced by using the proposed method.
