Abstract
This study was undertaken to produce crack free seam welds of aluminium-magnesium alloys [5083 and 5754] using pulsed Nd:YAG laser. All the experiments in similar alloy welding without filler material addition resulted in welds with cracks. Electron micro probe analysis of the welds were carried out and it was found that the percentage of magnesium was reduced by 1 to 2 percent. Experiments with different filler material additions were carried out to avoid cracking. Using 4047 or 4043 as a filler material crack free welds can be obtained provided the weld metal contains at least 4% silicon.
