Abstract
Thermal effects are the vital factors that determine the performance of a high-power solid-state laser. The longitudinal distribution of pump sources significantly affects the thermal effect of a side-pumped laser rod. In this paper, a series of finite element models of side-pumped Nd:YAG laser rods have been constructed to investigate the thermal influence of the longitudinal pump distribution. In these models, pump sources are arranged over the rods homogeneously with constant total pump power, and the rods are cooled by water on the pump regions while by air on both sides. The distributions of laser diode arrays(LDAs) along the rod are modulated in the simulations. Four series of simulations are carried out by the finite element method. And the temperature distributions and the thermal focal lengths are calculated. The results indicate that the longitudinal length and distribution of pump regions along the rod have an impact on the thermal effect. Discontinuous pump regions provide a larger thermal focal length than the continuous ones. And in the axial direction of the rod, by decreasing the length of pump regions or increasing the spacing between them, the magnitude of the thermal effect can be reduced. This study will contribute to the optimal design of high-power laser-rod amplifiers.
