Abstract
Laser pumped phosphor (LPP) light sources overcome the luminance limits of LEDs and enable luminance levels > 1000 cd/mm² with solid state lighting (SSL). While laser pumped phosphor wheels are already widely used in digital projectors, static luminescent converters accelerate the transition to LPP for other etendue limited lighting applications as well, as they enable compact and reliable light engines. We present performance data of static converters under different irradiance and cooling conditions. Supported by numerical simulation, we derive comprehensive design rules for the most efficient use of static ceramic converter assemblies with respect to typical requirement profiles of light engines.
