The main reason for failure of the repeatered optical fiber submarine cable system itself is the pump failure of the repeater(RPT),which will affect the output power, gain spectrum and noise factor of RPT. The RPT works in the gain depth saturation region, and the subsequent cascaded RPT compensates for the reduced power. However, it will cause degradation of the gain spectrum and noise factor, resulting in degradation of the optical signal-to-noise ratio(OSNR) of the system and affecting system performance. The paper compares the gain spectrum, output power of RPT, OSNR and quality(Q) penalty in the long-distance system from the perspective of theoretical simulation and experimental test. The influence of the location and arrangement combinations of the failed pumps under different link lengths on system performance was studied. The research results show that the system performance evaluation method of pump failure penalty can accurately calculate the design margin and acceptance margin required for the stable operation of the system for 25 years, which has important guiding significance for the design, construction and acceptance of the submarine cable system.
