Abstract
The computer integration of the processes involved in the design and manufacture of a product is not attainable within the existence of a CAD model for the part. The CAD model is the source for many manufacturing automation processes such as automated process planning, fixture selection, etc. The process of CAD model generation for existing products is the focus of this paper. Mainly two problems are considered: (1) combining contact and non-contact scanning systems to achieve accuracy and automation of part surface digitization and, (2) defining the exact geometry of the object surface to create an engineering drawing for part production.
