Abstract
Alzheimer’s disease is a serious disease with complicated pathomechanism. By sending functioning genetic material to cells to fix a damaged gene, gene therapy is currently being shown in preclinical tests to offer the potential to treat AD. Although the instrument has been demonstrated to be safe in humans, investigations on its efficacy have come up empty. Cholinesterase inhibitors, for example, are being used in clinical settings despite having minimal effects. Current research has shown the effectiveness of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) on delaying the progression of AD. Ursolic acid (UA) have pharmacological effect for neurodegenerative diseases so far through the suppression of differentiation preventing oxidative stress, excessive inflammation and brain disorders. Being against several toxic insults in disparate cell types, ursolic acid’s in vitro biological effect is remarkable. In addition, it is tested that ursolic acid can modulate monoaminergic system which prevents mood and neurodegenerative-associated cognitive dysfunctions. Safflower yellow (SY), another type of TCM is discovered to have the ability for decreasing accumulation of Amyloid β, at the same time, reducing the overactivation of astrocytes in mouse models. In the mouse brain, SY increased enzyme expression associated to the clearance of Abeta and decreased protein expression related to the formation of Amyloid via suppressing neuronal death and tau hyperphosphorylation. This review provides mechanism and clinical trial for how UA and SY work to further acknowledge the therapeutic approach of the two TCM in AD treatment.
