Abstract

All-optical networks using single mode fibre technology provide for the first time the possibility of truly transparent communications systems. This paper considers the evolution of single mode technology towards complete optical networks based on optical space or wavelength switching. Progress towards the realisation of early experimental networks is also discussed.
